Muslim in literary means one who surrenders and submits. It is believed that individual personal peace is attained by utterly submitting to Allah.

A Munāfiq literal meaning is hypocrite.
According to Abu Huraira:-

Munafiqeen have a history they emerged in Islma when Muslims grew in number in a City of Madinah which later became a holy city after Prophet Muhammad migrated there and choose to stay, even after Makkah his(pbuh) homeland was won without a fight.
A few people in Madinah choose to accept Islam by tongue but they did not accept in their hearts. They were muslims by name but at many occasions they tried to harm Islam by plotting against Muslims, Quran & Islam with the enemies of Islam.
Allah sent Gabrael/Jibraeel(Peace be on him) and told Muhammad(PBUH) regrding these secret culprits. Revealing their names as well as there games and plans. When the close companions of Prophet(PBUH) came to know of this they asked him(PBUH) to reveal them there names so they can punish them of their crime/sin. But Muhammad(PBUH) did not reveal their names to other(except one young companion near the end of his life so that these hypocrites would not get Islamic funeral after the death of Prophet) neither did he allow them to kill these foes disguised as friends. Yes! he knew excatly who these dangerous friends were yet He choose not to kill these.
Today non-muslims who do not know the true history of Islam or deny everything positive regarding Islam tell you on nternet, tv, newspapaers, books and every mode of isformation that these hypocrites were innocent people who merely accepted Islam to save their lives. This infact is the strangest thing to say since
O. There were very few Muslims in Makkah who ended up migrating to Madinah since they were socially bycotted, bullied tortured and murdered because of their faith.
O. At the 11th year of Prophethood(11 years after He started preaching the message of One Allah) 6 people from Madinah accepted Islam. And next year 6 more people came from Madinah with 5 people who accepted Islam in their previous visit. When these accepted Islam as well Prophet sent one of his companion to spread the message of Islam in Madina. It was Muasab Bin Umair who went to preach Islam. At 14th year of Prophethood(when he was 54 years old) Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) himself migrated to Madina and more people accepted Islam. There were 3 type of people in Madina. One who were pure Muslims, second the tribes who were still believed and practiced idolatry and jews. And logically Muslims were in fewer numbers. Yet Islam flourished and within 11 years of stay in Madina Islam flourished and 79 years after Prophet Muhammad it reached to Spain. What happened to Muslims in Spain
O. There were many instances where these Munafiq(hypocrite) tried to harming Muslims, Islam and kill Prophet Muhammad.
There is a whole chapter in Quran regarding Munafiqeen and many verses throughout other chapters as well.
Allah says in Quran:
“When it is said to them: "Make not mischief on the earth", they say: "Why, we only want to make peace!" ", (al-Baqara, 2/11). " When it is said to them: "Believe as the others believe" they say: "Shall we believe as the fools believe?" Nay, of a surety they are the fools, but they do not know. When they meet those who believe, they say: "We believe" but when they are alone with their evil ones they say: "We are really with you; we (were) only jesting" (al-Baqara, 2/13-14).
The heart of munafiqs are like infertile land (al-A'raf, 7/58), they act based on their interests; they are changeable. (an-Nisa, 4/141; al-Ankabut, 29/10-11)
When believers gain a victory, they say: "Were we not with you?" in order to share the success and the booty― But if the Unbelievers gain a success, they say (to them): "Did we not guard you from the believers?" (an-Nisa, 4/141).
